Fabric of Society

 Turkey Red

Turkey red, a color obtained from a dying process first discovered in India, and was later produced in the old Turkish or Ottoman Empire. This unique bright cherry red was not processed in Western Europe until the 18th century, and only arrived in the United States after the Civil War, disappearing completely after World War II. The dying process is complex; turkey red is color fast, it doesn't bleed into other fabrics and will not fade in light.
